CHICAGO APRIL 25, 2003
A four-ton bronze sculpture of Abraham Lincoln now adorns the northeast
corner of Lincoln Highway and Chicago Road in Chicago Heights.
The city unveiled the sculpture during a public ceremony Friday morning. Lincoln now stands at the "Crossroads of the Nation," with the Arche
Fountain, the Memorial Mound and Our Lady of the Wayside at the other
three corners.
The sculpture is entitled "On the Road to Greatness. It depicts a life-size likeness of Lincoln, without beard, accepting
violets from one small girl while the other exhorts him to grow his
beard. Behind the figures is a tableau, with a log cabin and the White House
as it may have looked in 1860. The entire artwork functions as an allegory, with Lincoln trekking
from his humble roots all the way to the presidency.
While perched in the basket of the fire department's new ladder truck,
Chicago Heights Mayor Angelo "Sam" Ciambrone lifted the tarp that
covered the statue.
Marjorie Alexander sang "Battle Hymn of the Republic," as the sculpture
was unveiled.
Sigmund Erber, a frequent performer with The Drama Group in Chicago
Heights, read Lincoln's "Farewell to Springfield" speech and "The
Gettysburg Address."
The project's designer, John Bucci, spoke of the research he and mayoral
assistant Dominic Candeloro put into the project.
Instead of portraying Lincoln in his customary beard and serious
countenance, Bucci said the city deserved better.
